Ragdoll Cat Grooming & Care

Ragdoll cats are known for their luxurious long coats and require regular grooming to maintain their health and appearance. This includes brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and dental care. Brushing helps prevent matting and sheds loose hair, while bathing, if necessary, keeps their coat clean. * Begin your kittens grooming routine young, stick to a schedule and use treats to train your kitty to sit still while grooming.

Brushing Your Ragdoll Cat

Frequency: Brush Ragdolls 2-3 times per week, especially during shedding seasons. Tools: Use a slicker brush to remove loose hair and debris, and an undercoat rake to access the undercoat. Technique: Brush from head to tail, following the direction of hair growth. Mats: If mats form, use a mat splitter to cut them, then brush them out. Detangling: Use a pet-safe detangling spray for tougher knots.

Bathing Your Ragdoll Cat

Frequency: Bathing is generally needed every few months unless your cat gets particularly messy. Preparation: Prepare all bath items beforehand, including a cat-safe shampoo, towel, and a rubber mat in the bathtub. Water Temperature: Use warm, not hot, water.

Nail Trimming Your Ragdoll Cat

Frequency: Trim nails every 2-4 weeks, or more frequently if your cat has an active lifestyle. Be careful while trimming your Ragdoll’s nails—you should only clip the very tip of their nail. Pay attention not to reach the sensitive nerve endings. Use a professional groomer or your veterinarian’s office if you are uncomfortable clipping your cats nails. Scratching posts can make things easier. Your Ragdoll will keep their claws blunt and shed them naturally during playtime. They’re also less likely to scratch your furniture if they have a scratching post.

Your Ragdoll's Dental Care

Brushing: Brush your Ragdoll’s teeth daily using a vet-approved toothbrush. Your Ragdoll’s dental hygiene affects their dental health and general well-being. If neglected, dental diseases can lead to more serious conditions. Oral bacteria can spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys leading to endocarditis, valvular disease, and other heart problems. Ideally, you should brush your Ragdoll’s teeth every day using a vet-approved toothbrush. Feeding them a high-quality diet and dental food also plays a significant role in maintaining their gums and teeth.

Your Ragdoll's Diet

A high-quality diet and dental food also support oral health. The best way to keep your Maine Coon’s coat healthy, reduce shedding, and prevent any health problems is to groom them regularly and feed them sufficient amounts of nutritious food closely resembling what felines eat in the wild. Two primary nutrients should be:

  1. Animal protein
  2. Animal fat

Animal protein provides your kitty with essential amino acids—like taurine and arginine—that support: 1. Hair growth and repair 2. Muscle development  3. Proper organ function
